Guarnaschelli was the daughter of the cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli. Barnard College awarded her a degree with art history in 1991. She worked in 1991 for minimal wage at a bar called the American Place for one year. Guarnaschelli began her journey into the world of food through helping her mother make a number of dishes and writing cookbooks. Guarnaschelli worked under Larry Forgione (whose son is Iron Chef Marc Forgione), and later at various eateries in France, New York and Los Angeles, including Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. She was also employed at Daniel Boulud's restaurant named after him and Joachim Splichal's Patina before becoming executive chef at Butter. In the years prior to its closure, she worked as the executive chef of The Darby. She chairs The Museum of Food and Drink's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli wrote her first cookbook in the year 2013. "Old school comfort food: My Way of Learning to cook" includes the author's autobiographical details and her favorite recipes that Guarnaschelli has adapted from her career as a professional.
